Claire Blake is an Irish-born theatre designer and director. Trained originally as a costume designer at Edinburgh College of Art, she went on to pursue her passion for new approaches to music theatre and opera through a masters in Performance Design and Practice at Central Saint Martins, London. Blake now lives in Vienna, where she works professionally as a costume and stage designer and creates a new music theatre work each year. Her directorial work engages with contemporary and post-dramatic theatre practices and experimental music. She looks to critically redefine the relationship between director, writer & composer, through cross-disciplinary collaboration, experimentation and improvisation.
Blake’s costume work expands from Scottish Opera, the Edinburgh Fringe, Traverse and Lyceum theatres in Edinburgh, to the Wiener Taschenoper, Dschungel Wien, Jeunesse at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Metafilm and Bahamut Productions in Vienn, amongst others. She has participated in festivals such as the Prague Quadrennial, Hack the Barbican and the Tête à Tête Opera Festival. Her directorial work has been shown in London, Vienna and Athens.
She is chairwoman and founding member of Kollaborativ Kollektiv – Verein für neues Musiktheater und Oper and a member of Mapped Productions, London.
